Train from Bangkok to Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi
and other places on the West Coast of Thailand

Travel by train from Bangkok to Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi is possible only part of the way as there are no railway lines in this area of Southern Thailand.

What you have to do is travel a well trodden route of the train from Bangkok to Surat Thani, then catch a bus from just outside the station over to the West coast to Phuket, Krabi etc.

This route is what any travel agent in Bangkok will sell you, as a joint train and bus ticket.

If you want to do it yourself and save some money, all you have to do is buy your own train ticket from any main railway station within Thailand (up to 60 days in advance), then you can book your bus from Surat Thani railway station, direct from the bus company.

Bus Tickets from Surat Thani station to Phuket cost around 250 Baht.

You could take a chance and turn up at Surat Thani station without the connecting bus ticket, but we advise you to book them prior to arriving, as this is a popular route and can get quite busy during the high season.

It also works out cheaper by booking direct, rather than through an agent who will add his commission.

Train from Bangkok to Phuket Alternative Routes:

If you want to do the trip by train from Bangkok to Phuket a different way and escape the crowds, you could take the train from Bangkok to Chumphon.

From Chumphon, there is a small bus station in the centre of town that has around three buses a day leaving for Phuket and four to Bangkok.

Location of the Bus Station in Chumphon:

The bus station is about a ten minute walk from the station. After you arrive at the train station in Chumphon, walk straight down to the traffic lights and turn right. At the next set of traffic lights cross the road and and take the left turning. A couple of hundred metres or so down the road you will see a small Tesco's store. The entrance into the bus station is here.

Chumphon is also the gateway for ferries over to the popular diving island of Koh Tao, so you could spend a few days there, then continue your journey to Phuket by bus.

Or you could island hop from Koh Tao to Koh Phangan and Koh Samui, then get the ferry to Surat Thani.

Other options include visiting some of the beach resorts along the Gulf of Thailand such as Hua Hin, Cha Am, Pranburi, Ban Krut and Bang Saphan.

All these places have a railway station and you can travel by bus onwards to Phuket after your stay.
