The first part of the journey is best done on one of the overnight sleeper trains from Bangkok's Hua Lamphon Railway Station.

You could take a chance and turn up at Surat Thani station without the connecting bus ticket, but we advise you to book them prior to arriving, as this is a popular route and can get quite busy during the high season.
It also works out cheaper by booking direct, rather than through an agent who will add his commission.
If you want to do the trip by train from Bangkok to Phuket a different way and escape the crowds, you could take the train from Bangkok to Chumphon.
From Chumphon, there is a small bus station in the centre of town that has around three buses a day leaving for Phuket and four to Bangkok.
Location of the Bus Station in Chumphon :
The bus station is about a ten minute walk from the station. After you arrive at the train station in Chumphon, walk straight down to the traffic lights and turn right. At the next set of traffic lights cross the road and and take the left turning. A couple of hundred metres or so down the road you will see a small Tesco's store. The entrance into the bus station is here.
Chumphon is also the gateway for ferries over to the popular diving island of Koh Tao, so you could spend a few days there, then continue your journey to Phuket by bus.
Or you could island hop from Koh Tao to Koh Phangan and Koh Samui, then get the ferry to Surat Thani.
Other options include visiting some of the beach resorts along the Gulf of Thailand such as Hua Hin, Cha Am, Pranburi, Ban Krut and Bang Saphan.
All these places have a railway station and you can travel by bus onwards to Phuket after your stay.
