The easiest way to travel from KL to Penang Island is by KTM train from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth station.
From the station it is just a couple of minutes to walk up to the ferry terminal to catch the boat to George Town, Penang.
The ferry only takes 15 minutes to get to George Town, where you can either walk into town (5-10 minutes), catch a bus from the bus station next to the ferry exit or take a taxi.

The new ETS High-speed Electric Train Service from KL to Penang has now started rolling out :
Train number 2 the Ekspres Rakyat is an all air-conditioned seater train and costs:
1st class seat: Adult 67MYR - Child 38MYR
2nd class seat: Adult 34MYR - Child 21MYR
You can buy your train tickets up to 60 days in advance from KL Sentral or any other mainline station in Peninsular Malaysia.
