There are two main areas within Peninsular Malaysia where you can use these Komuter Trains and they are the cheapest and fastest (compared to the bus) way of getting around for relatively short distances:

The north between the state of Perlis on the border with Thailand, Kedah, Penang and Perak - see the next section below.

KTM Komuter Utara (Northern Commuter) Timetables

This new northern KTM Komuter route (Komuter Utara) only started operating in 2015 and is a good cheap way to travel by train in the states of Perlis, Kedah, Penang and into Perak.

There are actually two separate commuter routes in the north and you have to change trains at Bukit Mertajam to connect with either route.

Padang Besar - Butterworth Penang Komuter Line / Route




KTM Komuter Route North - UtaraKTM Komuter Route North - Utara (Extended to Kuala Kangsar - Sungai Siput - Ipoh in September 2023)

Commuter trains on this route operate (waktu operasi) every hour or two between Butterworth in Penang to the Thailand border at Padang Besar.

Stations on this route from south to north are:

 - Butterworth  - Bukit Tengah  - Bukit Mertajam (Interchange Station) - Tasek Gelugor - Sungai Petani - Gurun - Kobah - Alor Setar - for boats to Langkawi from Kuala Kedah  - Anak Bukit - Kodiang - Arau - for boats to Langkawi from Kuala Perlis  - Bukit Ketri - Padang Besar

A Shuttle Train Service can take you from Padang Besar to Hat Yai (operated by the State Railway of Thailand - SRT), where there are many more trains leaving north up to Bangkok, travelling through the central southern area of the country, before joining the east coast.

Butterworth - Ipoh Komuter Line / Route




This commuter route takes you from Penang state to Perak state, stopping at the following stations (from north to south):

 - Bukit Mertajam - Simpang Ampat - Nibong Tebal - Parit Buntar - Bagan Serai - Kamunting - Taiping - Padang Rengas (Extended to Kuala Kangsar - Sungai Siput - Ipoh in September 2023)
