If you do turn up at Padang Besar railway station without a ticket and all tickets from Padang Besar to Chumphon are already sold out, the best thing to do is to take train 46 to Hat Yai Junction railway station (or you can take an earlier shuttle train if you arrive early enough).
From Hat Yai Junction railway station, there are more train services to Chumphon (you may have to stay overnight in the city to make a connection).
