Taking the Chumphon to Hua Hin train is easily the best option, as the railway station in both places is located in the centre of town.
If you where to take a bus from Chumphon to Hua Hin, you would have to go way out of town to the main Chumphon Bus Terminal (located 7 km from the centre of town, off the main highway), then take a Bangkok bound bus that actually goes in to Hua Hin (most use the bypass around the city).
The distance from Chumphon to Hua Hin travelling by train is 256 km.

All services operate daily.
Ord = Ordinary
Rap = Rapid

Sp. Ex. = Special Express
Sp. Ex. DRC = Special Express Diesel Railcar - (Sprinter Train)
Fares for this journey start from as little as 49 Baht (for a 3rd class seat on an Ordinary fan cooled train).
For faster trains, fixed fees are added depending on the type and if the carriage is air-conditioned.
As most people will be coming off the islands, booking seats during the high season can mean a lot of waiting around at Chumphon Station, as many of the faster long distance trains will be full.
If you want to travel in 3rd class on the Ordinary or Rapid services, buying tickets on the day of departure should not be a problem.
For all other trains, booking in advance is highly recommended.
You can book your tickets from any SRT station before heading off to the islands.
