KTM Komuter trains in Malaysia are the much cheaper alternative to the Electric Train Services (ETS) used on the longer distance routes.

The difference is that KTM Komuter trains stop at all the smaller stations along the route.

This makes them slightly slower than ETS trains, with the journey time from BM to Ipoh taking 1 hour and 45 minutes by KTM Komuter (compared to about an hour and a half by ETS train).

The other main difference is that the seating on KTM Komuter trains is on a first-come, first-served basis (much like a tube / subway train in the west).

If you want to gaurantee getting a seat, your only option is to take the more expensive ETS trains that run between Bukit Mertajam and Ipoh (on ETS services you get a reserved seat number allocated at the time of booking).
