If you want to travel from the city of Alor Setar to Kuala Kedah Jetty to catch the ferry to Langkawi island, you can take the easy option and get a taxi for around 20 MYR, or you can save yourselves some money by taking a cheap local bus.
If you want to know how far it is from Alor Setar to the jetty at Kuala Kedah - it is around 13 kilometres.
If you are arriving in Alor Setar by train, you will have to take a walk from Alor Setar Railway Station into the city centre where the nearest bus stop is located.
The walk is not that far and should take only 10 -15 minutes.
When exiting the station, the easiest way to get there is to turn right and walk past the old train station until you come to a main road.
Turn left here and continue walking into the city centre.
The bus stop is located on the road that runs parallel to this road to the north (once it turns into a one-way system).

The bus that you want to get is a white coloured HBR Group bus.
They operate the local bus routes around Alor Setar.
The buses destination should be written on the lower right hand side of the buses window screen.
The fare for the bus from Alor Setar to Kuala Kedah is just 1.70 MYR and the trip should take between 20 and 30 minutes depending on traffic.
The bus will drop you off on the main road in front of the Kuala Kedah Ferry Terminal building.
The ticket counters for the ferry to Langkawi are located just inside the terminal building.
You can also use these buses to and from the Alor Setar main bus station (Terminal Bas Shahab Perdana).
If you want to travel in the other direction form Kuala Kedah to Alor setar by bus, there is no Kuala Kedah bus terminal, just a bus stop on the main road in front of the ferry terminal.
