The duration of the journey from Alor Setar to the Thai border takes around 35 to 40 minutes by Electric Train Service (ETS).

An alternative and much cheaper option to get to Padang Besar from Alor Setar is to take a more frequent KTM Komuter Utara train service.
These trains are only slightly slower over this short distance taking 43 minutes.
The main difference is that you may have to stand for part of the journey as unlike ETS trains where you have a reserved seat, KTM Komuter trains seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
