Taking the Hat Yai to Surat Thani Train is a popular way to travel to the islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, as Surat Thani Railway Station is used as the main pick-up point for transfers to the ferry ports by bus.
Once you arrive at the train station (actually located in a place called Phun Phin, 15 km outside Surat Thani city centre), there are nummerous places to buy bus and ferry tickets over to the islands.
This is also a transport hub for those who want to travel over to the west coast of Thailand (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi Islands..), with regular bus and minivans departing from pick-up points close to the station

Unless you want to travel in 3rd class, you should always book your train tickets in advance (especially during the high season of November to April).
You can buy tickets from the advance booking office at Hat Yai station (or any SRT railway station in Thailand), but it is better to book them as far in advance as possible to make sure you can get a seat.
