A really quick and easy way to get from BM to Sg Petani is to take a KTM Bukit Mertajam to Sungai Petani Komuter train. These cheap train services operate on the Komuter Utara (Northern Commuter) route between Butterworth and Padang Besar.

The KTM Berhad commuter services operate from the first train in the early hours of the morning, then at fairly regular intervals throughtout the day, until the last train in the evening.

The duration of the train journey to Sungai Petani from Bukit Mertajam (BM) is scheduled to take 23 minutes, stopping just once along the route at Tasek Gelugor.

The KTM Sungai Petani railway station is located right in the centre of town (use the footbridge just to the south of the train station to cross over the tracks to get to the town centre).

To travel by KTM Komuter train there is no need to book tickets in advance (unlike ETS trains).

Just turn up at Bukit Mertajam Railway Station, buy your Komuter tickets from the ticket counter, then take the next commuter train heading north towards Padang Besar.

Seats on the KTM Komuter trains are on a first come, first served basis with a wide central aisle for standing passengers.

During busy times, you may find you will have to stand for some or all of the journey.

Previously you could take an ETS train on the route from BM to Sg Petani. However, KTM no longer operate ETS trains between Butterworth and Padang Besar.
