Unlike ETS trains where you should book your tickets in advance, tickets for the cheap KTM Komuter trains are only available to buy from the ticket office at Ipoh Railway Station on the day of departure.
We would recommend you arrive at the station a least 15 - 20 minutes before your train departs to buy your tickets as the railway station in Ipoh is often busy and there could be a long queue for tickets.
Seating on KTM Commuter trains is on a first come, first served basis so be prepared to have to stand for part of the journey if you are travelling during very busy times of the year.
If you want to gaurantee getting a seat, you should think about taking an ETS train from Ipoh to BM.
They are more expensive, but are much more comfortable with each ticket getting their own reserved seat.
Bukit Mertajam is the
interchange station
of the two KTM Komuter Utara routes. So, if you are planning on travelling to Langkawi or up to the border with Thailand, this is where you can change trains for services on the Butterworth - Padang Besar Komuter route.
