Travel from Penang to Taiping in Perak State on the new high-speed ETS train from Butterworth to Taiping.
This short journey by the new Electric Train Service is faster than travelling by bus at less than an hour, but a little bit more expensive.

You can also travel by the much cheaper KTM Komuter (commuter) train.
For some trips, you will first have to take a Butterworth to Bukit Mertajam train on the Butterworth to Padang Besar Komuter Route.

From September 2016, it is now also possible to travel from Butterworth to Taiping by Komuter Train.
A new Komuter route has started between Padang Rengas and Bukit Mertajam / Butterworth.
To get to Butterworth KTM Railway Station from Penang island, you have to take the ferry from Georgetown over to the Penang Sentral terminal building in Butterworth.
From there it is just a few minutes walk to get to the train station.

On the new high-speed Electric Train Services (ETS), tickets for the train from Butterworth to Taiping, or vice versa, will cost you:
ETS Gold Service Trains: Adult 21 MYR - Child 15 MYR
ETS Platinum Service Trains: Adult 26 MYR - Child 17 MYR

Tickets can be purchased from the railway stations or if you are staying on Penang Island, you can buy tickets from the small ticket office which is located along the walkway up to the Penang to Butterworth ferry.
You can also book tickets online from the KTM website or by using an online ticket agent (which is much easier).
Tickets are available for purchase from a few months, to a few weeks in advance (depending on when KTM release tickets for sale and if they have a new timetable planned).
