If you are on a really tight budget or just enjoy travelling on the much slower ordinary local trains, it is possible to get all the way to Bangkok using these services.
One possible route would be to take ordinary train 446 from Hat Yai to Chumphon, spend the night in Chumphon (there are plenty of cheap budget hotels near Chumphon Train Station, as this is the gateway for ferries over to Koh Tao), then take train 254 to Thon Buri Train Station in Bangkok the next morning.
The trip by ordinary trains is very slow and often delayed but will only cost you approximately 160 Baht (making it the cheapest way to travel from Hat Yai to Bangkok).
