The quickest and cheapest way get from Tasek Gelugor to Sungai Petani is to take one of the regular KTM Komuter (commuter) trains that operate on the northern commuter route (Laluan Komuter Utara) between Butterworth and Padang Besar or you could take one of the less frequent ETS services.
We would recommend you travel on the cheap KTM Komuter trains although they can get quite busy on this part of the route, it is only one stop to Sungai Petani and the duration of the train journey is only 11 minutes so if you have to stand for the whole journey it is not too bad.

After your short train journey, you arrive at the KTM Sungai Petani Station which is located right in the centre of town.
If you want to connect to buses, the SP Bus Terminal is located along the same road as the train station (just turn right as you exit the station and walk for about 5 minutes and you will see the bus station on the left).
There is also another smaller local bus station just off the main road that runs through the centre of town.
To get here you will have to cross the railway tracks using the footbridge (turn right as you exit the station).
Around the area of the main road through town is where you will find some places to stay in SP (although there is the Hotel Seri Malaysia just across the road from the station) as well as many banks, restaurants and shopping outlets.
