The train is not the fastest way to get to Chiang Mai from Bangkok, so you may want to look into other options for travel.
There are regular buses that run from Mo Chit (Northern Bus Terminal) or you can take a coach with other travellers on the buses from the Khao San Road to Chiang Mai.

If you are short on time, cheap flights by budget airlines are available from DMK or there are scheduled services from BKK to CNX airport.
The 2nd and 1st class carriages on this service are all air-conditioned.
Lower berths are quite a bit wider than the upper berths, so are much more spacious and comfortable (they also sell out first).
Air-conditioning can be a bit cold during the night so bring something warm to wear.
A restaurant car travels with this train and open for evening meals and breakfast.
Please note: No alcohol is now sold or allowed on any SRT trains.
