Special Express Bangkok to Padang Besar

Train 45 in Thailand is an overnight sleeper train service that departs from Bangkok's new railway station, Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal (Bang Sue Grand Station), arriving at the border between Thailand and Malaysia the following morning.

The duration of the train journey from Bangkok to Malaysia is a little over 16 hours, with the final station on this service located just inside Malaysia at Padang Besar Railway Station.

This service is an all 2nd-class sleeper service. When you first get on the train, all the carriages on this train will be arranged as seats. During the early evening these seats will be converted into lower and upper sleeping berths.

Ticket Prices for the Bangkok to Padang Besar Train No 45

The train fare from Bangkok to Padang Besar is:

Lower berths are wider and much more comfortable and well worth the extra cost if you can get one (they sell out first during busy times of the year).

Buying Tickets for Train 45

If you want to travel to Padang Besar from Bangkok by train, it is highly recommended that you book your tickets as far in advance as you can.

To book advance train tickets in Thailand, you can visit the ticket office at any State Railway of Thailand (SRT) mainline railway station, or you can book tickets online from SRT or an online ticket agent like 12Go for a small extra fee.

Arriving at Padang Besar Railway Station Malaysia

After train 45 arrives in Malaysia, all passport control procedures are carried out at the station. Once you have your passport stamped out of Thailand and into Malaysia, you can then continue your journey by train.

Padang Besar is well served by regular, cheap KTM Komuter (commuter) trains that travel down to Butterworth in Penang. You can also use the Komuter train to get as far south as Ipoh if you change trains at Bukit Mertajam.

There are also a number of daily departures on the long-distance ETS train that can take you to places like Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru (5 minutes by train from Singapore).

If you are travelling to Langkawi Island, you can take a bus from the main road in the centre of town to Kangar. Then another bus from Kangar to the ferry terminal at Kuala Perlis for regular boats over to Langkawi.
