By far the cheapest way to get to Sungai Petani from Alor Setar is to hop on one of the northern commuter trains that depart from Alor Setar Railway Station at regular intervals from the early morning until the evening.
The journey to SP from Alor Setar by KTM Komuter takes only 34 minutes (much faster than a bus and also cheaper).

Once the train arrives at Sungai Petani Railway Station, it is just a short walk to the centre of town (you need to turn right after leaving the station and take the footbridge over the tracks).

The train route between Alor Setar and Sungai Petani is very busy during the rush hours so you will probably have to stand for most of the journey.
If you need a seat, you will have to take one of the more expensive ETS trains.

Taking the Electric Train Service (ETS) from Alor Setar to Sp will cost you at least three times as much as the commuter train and services are less frequent.
The only advantage of taking an ETS train for this short journey is that you are guaranteed a seat as all tickets come with a reserved seat number (unlike commuter trains where seating is on a first-come, first-served basis).

Taking the Komuter train is simple, you just turn up at Alor Setar Train Station, go to the ticket counter, buy your tickets and hop on the next train.
