If you want to travel on the Sungai Petani to Alor Setar Train you have a choice of services.
The regular and cheap KTM Komuter services (recommended).
Or you can take one of the ETS - Electric Train Services.
Taking a (commuter) Komuter train from SP to Alor Setar is by far the best option as they are easily the cheapest way to travel from Sg. Petani to Alor Setar
They are also the most regular services, with trains leaving every hour during the busy times of the day, then every two hours at the quieter times of day.
The trip to A. Setar takes just 34 minutes (much faster than a bus) and costs only 5 MYR.
Once at Alor Setar Railway Station, you can either walk into the city centre (around ten minutes) or take a taxi.
The is no real reason to take an ETS train from Sungai Petani to Alor Setar - it will cost you over three times as much and is only slightly faster at around 30 minutes.
ETS Gold services cost 16 MYR
ETS Platinum services cost 19 MYR
The only advantage of the ETS Trains are that you will be given a reserved seat when you buy your tickets, but for this short trip it is hardly worth it.
Another advantage of using the KTM Komuter Trains is that you just turn up at the station and buy your tickets for the next departure - Komuter tickets are only sold on the day of departure and there is always enough space on the train (but you may not get a seat if it is really busy).
If you want to use the ETS Trains, our best advise is always to book in advance as these trains are all reserved seat services and can operate full at many times of the year.
If you want to make an advance ETS seat booking, you can do that at any KTMB mainline train station, or:
