A quicker alternative than taking a bus, you can also travel from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS Bus Terminal) to Sungai Petani by train.
These fast ETS trains depart from the Bandar Tasik Selatan (BTS) Railway Station, located next to the TBS bus terminal.

As there is currently few direct departure a day from TBS to Sg. Petani, another alternative way to travel by train is to first take a short train ride to KL Sentral Railway Station, then you can connect to all ETS trains heading north to Sungai Petani.
Please Note: Before you travel to KL Sentral make sure you can get a seat first on the ETS train you want to travel on - so buy your ETS tickets either from BTS railway station or online.
You can get to KL Sentral by train from TBS in 10 to 18 minutes (depending on what type of train you take).
