Hua Hin to Koh Tao by Bus and Ferry Combo Ticket
By far the most popular way to get to Koh Tao from Hua Hin is to buy a bus and ferry combo ticket.
Lomprayah High Speed Ferries operates a daily service from their office on Phet Kasem Road in the centre of Hua Hin (400 metres south of the Clock Tower) that departs in the morning and arrives in Koh Tao in the afternoon.
This is by far the fastest and most convenient way to get to Koh Tao from Hua Hin, with the journey taking just 6 and a half hours.
- The distance by bus from Hua Hin to the Chumphon ferry departure point (Thung Makham Noi Pier) is approximately 290 km and takes around four hours and 15 minutes.
- The high-speed ferry (catamaran) from Chumphon to Koh Tao takes one hour and 45 minutes.
- Standard tickets for the Lomprayah bus and ferry cost 1,250 THB for adults (anyone aged 11 and upwards) - 625 THB for children (aged between 2 and 11) - free for children under the age of 2.
- VIP bus and ferry combo tickets from Hua Hin to Koh Tao cost 1,550 THB for adults - 775 THB for children.
- The boat arrives at the pier in the main town on the west of the island, Mae Haad (just a short distance from the busiest and most popular beach areas - Sairee Beach).

We would recommend you take the bus / ferry combo if you want to travel by bus as nearly all other bus services from Hua Hin to Chumphon will drop you off at the main Chumphon bus station that is located just off the highway (7 km away from the city centre).
How to get to Koh Tao from Hua Hin by Train
It is possible to get from Hua Hin to Koh Tao by train, bus and ferry.
The first part of the journey is to take an SRT (State Railways of Thailand) train from Hua Hin to Chumphon.
There are a wide choice of trains that depart from Hua Hin Railway Station to fit your budget - from 1st Class A/C sleepers to the really cheap 3rd Class fan cooled seats.
The train journey itself is quite relaxing and offers the opportunity to see the beautiful countryside of Thailand if you make the journey through the daytime - or save on a nights accommodation if you take one of the night sleeper trains.
Travelling by train from Hua Hin to Koh Tao also gives you the option of taking the early morning

Remember that train schedules in Thailand can be a bit unpredictable. Be prepared for delays, especially if you are travelling on one of the cheap local train services - The more expensive Special Express and Express trains tend to have the least delays - The cheaper your train choice, the more likely you will be delayed!

Once you arrive at Chumphon Railway Station, you will have to get to the Lomprayah ferry departure point which is located approximately 27 km from the train station at Thung Makham Beach.
You could take a taxi / motorbike taxi for this part of the journey, but it is much cheaper and more convenient to buy your ferry tickets to Koh Tao in Chumphon (which will include the bus journey out to the pier departing from just in front of the train station).
Ferry tickets to Koh Tao are available to buy from a kiosk at the train station and in most of the budget / backpacker accommodations that you will find just a few minutes walk away from the train station (if you decide to stay a night or two in Chumphon).
