On this page we will show you the best ways to travel from Bangkok to Koh Tao in Thailand by a combination of flight, bus, train and then a ferry to the island.
If you plan on doing a little island hoping between Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao you first will have to decide on which way round you want to go.
The most direct route from Bangkok is to go to Chumphon, then catch a ferry directly to Koh Tao from there.
You can then continue to Koh Phangan and then Koh Samui by boat from there, coming back to the mainland close to Surat Thani, where you can continue your journey south by bus, minibus or train.
If however you are heading back north, you may want to start your island hoping from Koh Samui and end up in Koh Tao, then get back to the mainland via Chumphon.
Both Chumphon and Surat Thani railway stations are on the main Thailand Southern Railway Line, with all trains heading south stopping at these stations.
All the ferry operators have bus pick up services from the train stations to the various ferry ports.
If you want to go directly to Koh Tao, catch the train from Hua Lamphong Railway Station in Bangkok to Chumphon.
If you want to go to Koh Samui first, catch the train to Surat Thani.
