Sungai Petani to Kuala Perlis Jetty by Train, Bus, Car, Ferry

If you are looking to travel from Sungai Petani (SP) to Langkawi Island (Pulau Langkawi) you may want to take the Sungai Petani to Kuala Perlis route as the ferry over to the island is the shortest and cheapest from here.

The other way to get to Langkawi from SP overland would be to travel from Kuala Kedah Jetty (close to Alor Setar).

Sungai Petani to Kuala Perlis Jetty by Train, then Bus or Taxi

By far the best way to get to Kuala Perlis Jetty from Sungai Petani is to take a KTM train to Arau railway station (the closest train station to the jetty at Kuala Perlis).

There is a choice of train services from SP:

The cheap and regular KTM Komuter Utara (Northern commuter) train >

Or the more expensive but more comfortable ETS trains >

For this short train trip, we would recommend you take the KTM Komuter train service.

Most of the time the Komuter train will be busy on the section up to Alor Setar but once you are past the city, you should be able to get a seat for the rest of the journey to Arau.

What is the cheapest way to get to Kuala Perlis from Sungai Petani?

If you take the cheap Komuter train then a bus to Kuala Perlis you should be able to do the whole trip for less than 13 MYR.

If you can get a shared taxi from the station (4 people) the whole trip should cost around 14 MYR.

If you don't mind paying a lot more, you could take one of the ETS trains to Arau.

These long-distance trains are only a few minutes quicker on this short journey but you do get a reserved seat when you purchase your ticket.

Arau Railway Station to Kuala Perlis Jetty

Once you arrive by train at Arau station, to get to the ferry terminal in Kuala Perlis you can take a taxi or a local MyBas Perlis bus from the train station to Kangar, then another MyBas bus from Kangar to Kuala Perlis.

Bus to Kuala Perlis from Sungai Petani

(Bas ke Kuala Perlis dari Sungai Petani)

There are no direct bus services from SP to Kuala Perlis.

If you do want to travel by bus you will first have to take a bus from SP to Alor Setar bus terminal.

From Alor Setar, you should then take a bus to Kangar.

From Kangar, you can then take a bus to Kuala Perlis.

This journey would take a long time and end up costing much more than taking the Komuter train!

Driving / Car to Kuala Perlis Jetty from Sungai Petani

(Memandu / Kereta ke Jeti Kuala Perlis dari Sungai Petani)

If you want to drive from Sungai Petani to Langkawi the distance by road is approximately 110 km for the shortest route.

Once you arrive at the jetty area you will find plenty of places to park for around 10 MYR a day if you want to take the passenger ferry over to Langkawi.

If you want to take your car to Langkawi you can take one of the roll-on, roll-off car ferries that depart from the same jetty.
