From 19/05/2016 the two direct KTMB Intercity Express Trains from Johor Bahru to Ipoh have been cancelled as all the old long distance diesel trains on the North - South Railway Line have been cancelled from this date.
To travel from JB to Ipoh by train, you will now have to catch a Shuttle Train to Gemas, then connect to a high-speed Electric Train Service (ETS) from Gemas to Ipoh.
The first part of the journey from JB to Gemas is by Shuttle Train :
New ETS Timetable valid from 18th December 2017 in to 2018.
Once you arrive at Gemas, you can connect with the new fast Electric Train Services (ETS Trains)

Tickets for the Shuttle Trains to Gemas cost :
Adults : 21 MYR - Children : 15 MYR (for 2nd class Superior Seats).
The ETS Electric Trains from Gemas to Ipoh cost :
ETS Gold : Adults : 59 MYR - Children : 34 MYR
There are no 1st or 2nd class seats on any ETS Trains - they are all the same.
You will have to buy two separate tickets to travel from JB to Ipoh by train.
You can buy tickets at any KTMB mainline railway station in advance (booking periods vary from a few weeks to a few months).
If you are not in Malaysia or want to save the time and expense of travelling out to the station, you can also book tickets online via KTMB (for a small additional fee) or use an online ticketing agent that is usually slightly cheaper.
If you find the trains are full on the dates you want to travel, the other option is to catch a bus from JB to Ipoh.
