Trang to Hat Yai Train

Travel on the Trang to Hat Yai train is possible, but not recommended as it involves a much longer journey than by bus or minivan and means you will have to stay overnight in Thung Song Junction or have a really long wait at the station.

The distance from Trang to Hat Yai by road is about 150 km (a 2 to 2 and a half hours drive).

If you travel by train, you will be making a much longer journey of 244 km, as the train has to head north first (between the mountains), before heading south.

The road from Trang cuts through the mountains to Phatthalung (60 km), then it's a drive south to Hat Yai.

The only reason to travel by train is if you wanted to save money on transport costs.

The train journey can be done for as little as 80 THB (travelling 3rd class all the way - using the Rapid service to Thung Song, then an Ordinary service to Hat Yai)

Minivans or the bus from Trang to Hat Yai cost between 200 and 250 THB.

As the road to Hat Yai from Trang cuts across the mountains to Phatthalung, you could take a bus over the mountains from Trang to here (60 km), then take a train from Phatthalung to Hat Yai (83 km) >

The bus terminal in Phatthalung is located outside of town on the main highway, so you will have to take a songthaew in to town or a motorbike taxi.
