To travel from Penang to Kajang by train you have a choice of taking one of the few direct ETS Butterworth to Kajang trains, or you can take a more frequent ETS train from Butterworth to KL Sentral, then connect to a cheap KTM Komuter train for the last leg of the journey.
The duration of the train journey from Butterworth Penang Sentral to Kajang for the direct service is a little under 5 hours.

Now KTM are using Flexi Fares for train ticket booking for ETS services, prices can vary due to a number of factors.
These include how far you book in advance (if you book tickets over 30 days in advance you get a discount, less than 6 days and you pay a premium), what day, time and period of the year you are travelling in (weekends and holiday periods will now cost more than normal off-peak times).

It is always best to book ETS train tickets in Malaysia in advance so you can make sure you can get a seat on the train you want to travel on and with flexi fares, it is cheaper.
To make an advance booking you can:
1) Go to the KTM ticket office in Georgetown located along the walkway up to the jetty where the ferry boats leave for Butterworth.
2) Go to the ticket counter at Butterworth railway station.
