By far the quickest way to get from Gurun to Sungai Petani (SP) is to take one of the trains operated by KTM (Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad).
You have a choice of train types on this route.
You can take the cheap KTM Komuter Utara (northern commuter) train.
Or you can take one of the Electric Train Services (ETS).
For this short journey, we would recommend you take the Komuter train as services are far more frequent and fares are very cheap.

The duration of the train journey by KTM Komuter from Gurun to SP is only 13 minutes and there are no stops (SP is the next station on this route).
The one drawback to using the commuter trains is that you may find you will not be able to get a seat as this sector of the route can be quite busy.
If you do need a seat, you will have to take one of the much more expensive ETS trains.
When you travel by ETS train in Malaysia, you get a reserved seat number when you book your tickets.
However, ETS services from Gurun Railway Station are not very frequent.
