Bangkok to Langkawi by Train and Ferry

If you want to travel from Bangkok to Langkawi by train, there are a few options you can take to get there, either via a train to Hat Yai, then a ferry from Satun or take the train in to Malaysia and a ferry from Kuala Perlis or even Kuala Kedah.

Bangkok to Langkawi via Hat Yai / Satun

1) Take one of the night trains from the new Bang Sue Grand Railway Station (Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal) in Bangkok to Hat Yai Railway Station in southern Thailand.

2) From in front of the station in Hat Yai, you can then take a minibus to Satun (about two hours - 250 Baht - although they may try to charge you more).

3) From Satun bus station you will then have to take a songthaew (30 Baht) or taxi to Tammalang pier, where there are currently three boats a day to Kuah Jetty on Langkawi Island.

Boats currently depart at 10:30, 14:30 and 17:00 (please check for the latest departure times before travelling), and take approximately one hour and 15 minutes to make the crossing and cost 300 Baht.

Bangkok to Langkawi via Arau / Kuala Perlis Jetty

This is our preferred way to travel form Bangkok to Langkawi by train, as there are many more boats from Kuala Perlis, plus you do not have to deal with the rip-off merchants in Hat Yai and it should cost you less if there are a few of you travelling together.

1) Take the night train from Bangkok to Padang Besar.

2) Take a KTM Komuter train from Padang Besar to Arau (3.20 MYR - approximately 20 minutes)

3) Take a taxi from Arau Railway Station to Kuala Perlis Jetty (around 26 MYR - 20 to 30 minutes).

4) Take a boat from Kuala Perlis to Kuah on Langkawi (18 MYR).

Boats take one hour to one hour 15 minutes to make the crossing and there are usually 10 trips a day.

Bangkok to Langkawi by Train via Alor Setar / Kuala Kedah Jetty

This is a slightly longer route, but if you are a solo traveller it will work out cheaper to go this way as you can take a very cheap local bus from Alor Setar to Kuala Kedah Jetty, so no need for the more expensive taxi.

1) Take the night train from Bangkok to Padang Besar.

2) Take a KTM Komuter train from Padang Besar to Alor Setar Railway Station (43 minutes - 5.70 MYR).

3) Take a local bus from the city centre to Kuala Kedah Jetty (20 to 30 minutes - 1.70 MYR).

4) Take a ferry from Kuala Kedah to Kuah on Langkawi (23 MYR).

The ferry from Kuala Kedah takes around one hour 30 to one hour 45 minutes and there are usually 10 trips a day.
