The Cheapest Way to get to Taiping from Alor Setar
If you don't mind a slightly longer journey, there is a much cheaper way to get to Taiping from Alor Setar by train if you use the KTM Komuter Utara (northern commuter) services.
Taking these cheap Komuter trains should take a little under two hours and cost only a third of the price of the fastest ETS train.
What you have to do is take the KTM Komuter from Alor Setar to Bukit Mertajam (the main interchange station for commuter services in the north).
You then have to change trains onto a Bukit Mertajam to Taiping Komuter train (the wait should only be around 5 to 6 minutes for most services to depart - These trains mostly originate from here so they will be there waiting for inbound passengers).
The only problem with travelling this way is that you may have to stand for part of the journey as commuter trains do not have reserved seating and they are usually very busy between Alor Setar and Bukit Mertajam.
The last sector to Taiping should have fewer passengers and as most of these trains originate from Bukit Mertajam, there is a good chance of getting a seat on this part of the journey.

Alor Setar to Taiping by Bus
You can also travel by bus to Taiping. However, arriving at the central train station is far more convenient than arriving by bus (the nearest two long-distance bus terminals are 6 and 7 km from the town centre).
Travel by bus will be cheaper than going by ETS train, but more expensive than taking the KTM Komuter trains.
