The cheapest train to travel on is the Rapid service.
This daytime service offers cheap seating in 2nd and 3rd class.

The Sprinter, Diesel Railcar service (DRC) has just a few 2nd class, air-conditioned carriages and is the fastest of all trains on this route.

Included in the ticket price for Sprinter trains are meals and soft drinks.
The Express service offers the widest choice of carriages:

Booking Train Tickets to Lopburi from Chiang Mai
As all these services operate on the Chaing Mai - Bangkok route, they are often fully booked well in advance during the high season (December to April).
If you want to travel in anything other then 3rd class, you should book you tickets as soon as you have a planned travel date.
