The quickest way to travel from Sungai Petani (SP) to Taiping is to take the ETS Sungai Petani to Taiping train operated by KTMB (Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad).
The Electric Train Service is a much faster way to travel compared to the bus and the other advantage is that both trains stations are within a short walk of the town centres.
The duration of the journey by ETS train to Taiping from SP is approximately one hour and 5 minutes for the fastest Platinum services and around one hour 10 - 15 minutes for the slightly slower Gold services (these trains stop more frequently).

If you are not in a rush, there is a much cheaper way you can get to Taiping from SP using KTM Komuter trains (this way is even cheaper than travelling by bus).
What you can do is:
Take a cheap KTM Komuter (commuter) train from SP to Bukit Mertajam.
At Bukit Mertajam, you then change trains onto another KTM Komuter train heading south to Taiping.

If you want to travel by ETS train to Taiping you will need to reserve a seat.
It is always best to book your seats in advance as some trains can be fully booked during busy periods.
To book tickets / seats you can:
Visit any KTM ETS railway station ticket counter.
If you want to travel from Sungai Petani to Taiping by KTM Komuter train, you have to buy your tickets on the day of travel (no advance booking is available or necessary).
