If you decide to take the slightly longer but cheaper KTM Komuter Utara train from Parit Buntar to Alor Setar you just turn up at the station, buy your tickets from the ticket counter, then hop on the next Komuter heading to Bukit Mertajam.

If you are travelling from Parit Buntar to Langkawi Island (Pulau Langkawi), you can take a boat from the nearby Kuala Kedah Jetty.
You can get to the ferry terminal by taxi or take a local bus from the city centre.
