If you would like to take a night train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai there is a choice of four departures a day that originate from the new railway station in Bangkok -
Bang Sue Grand Station
(Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal).
These sleeper trains take
roughly
between 12.5 to 14 hours to travel the 744 kilometre distance between Bang Sue and Chiang Mai and cost from 558 Baht for the cheapest sleeping berth (or for as little as 230 Baht if you want to rough it and travel in a 3rd class fan cooled seat).
All trains depart from Bang Sue Grand Station.

The only other train heading to Chiang Mai from Bangkok is the Special Express DRC train number 7, which is an all seater 2nd class service that departs from Bang Sue in the morning.
All trains terminate at Chiang Mai Railway Station which is located two and half kilometres east of the "Old Town" and the centre of the city.
You could walk into the city (it will take you around 30 minutes to get to the old walls of the "Old Town") or you can take various forms of transport from just outside the train station.

If you are already in Thailand you can buy tickets for these sleeper trains from Bangkok to Chiang Mai at any mainline SRT railway station ticket counter / ticket office. The price you pay will be those shown above (you will usually be asked for some form of ID, so bring your passport along with you when buying train tickets).
We would advise you book your tickets as far in advance as you can as these trains can get fully booked during busy times of the year and the more comfortable lower sleeping berths are usually the first ones to be sold out (tickets for this route usually go on sale 90 days in advance).
If you are not in Thailand or you want to plan ahead to make sure you can travel on a particular day, you can also book your train tickets online for an additional fee.
