Bang Sue to Chiang Mai Train Timetable 2024 - Ticket Prices

If you want to travel from the capital of Thailand to the north by train, you now have to take the Bang Sue to Chiang Mai train as there are now no trains departing from the centre of Bangkok (Hua Lamphong station).

Bang Sue Grand Railway Station (now re-named Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal) is located northeast of the city centre (easy to get to by MRT) and is now the major junction for most long-distance trains heading north, east and south.

The distance from Bang Sue Junction to Chiang Mai by train is 744 km.

Please note: From the 19th of January 2023 all trains from Bangkok to Chiang Mai now originate from the new train station in Bangkok - Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal (Bang Sue Grand Station) - There are now no departures to Chiang Mai from the old Bang Sue Junction Station or the old Bangkok railway station (Hua Lamphong).

 Ticket Prices for the Train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai

Prices shown are for one-way tickets in Thai Baht (THB).

Train number 7 is a fast Sprinter Train (Special Express DRC).

This all seat service is made up of just a few carriages, which are all 2nd Class air-conditioned coaches.

Tickets on this service cost 638 THB (Adult fare), 499 THB (Child fare).

When you travel on this train, you get served meals and soft drinks by an onboard steward / stewardess (all included in the price of the ticket).

Train 109 is a Rapid service , which is the slowest train on this route, but it is also the cheapest.

3rd class seats in a fan cooled carriage cost : Adult 230 THB / Child 170 THB.

2nd class seats in a fan cooled carriage cost : Adult 388 THB / Child 249 THB.

2nd class sleeping berths / beds in an air-conditioned carriage cost:
Upper Berth: Adult 688 THB - Child 549 THB
Lower Berth Adult 758 THB - Child 619 THB

Please note: If you are travelling in the opposite direction on Rapid train 102, there are only 2nd and 3rd class seat carriages available on this daytime service.

Train number 9 and Train number 13 are Special Express night sleeper trains and operate with just 2nd and 1st class air-conditioned sleeper carriages.

Train number 9 is the more expensive of these services as it has the new Chinese made CNR carriages (first put into service in late 2016).

Train number 51 is an Express service which is slightly slower than the Special Express services, but has a wider choice of seating in the cheaper classes.

2nd class fan cooled sleeper carriages:

Booking Tickets on the Bang Sue to Chiang Mai Train

You will need a reservation to travel on these trains if you are not planning to rough it in 3rd class.

The further in advance you book your tickets, the more likely you are to get the type of seat or sleeping berth of your choice.
