KL to Langkawi by Bus, Train, Ferry, Flight

If you want to know how to get from KL to Langkawi, you can choose from either a direct flight, a fast ETS train to either Alor Setar or Arau, or a bus from KL to Kuala Perlis or Kuala Kedah from where you can take the fast ferry boat to Kuah.

The most popular way to travel from KL to Langkawi by train is to take one of the Gold or Platinum ETS train services to Arau Railway Station in the state of Perlis.

From Arau Railway Station, you then have to travel to the jetty at Kuala Perlis approximately 19 km away.

You can take one of the many waiting taxis or you could take a cheap MyBas Perlis bus via Kangar (if you have plenty of time to spare), to the port of Kuala Perlis, where there are fast ferry boats over to Langkawi island every hour or so during daylight hours.

You will need to click on the "Bukit Lagi" timetable.

The bus from KTM Arau Station is bus number T10 on the Kangar - Changlun route.

From Kangar Bus Station (Terminal Bukit Lagi), you will then have to take bus number T12 on the Kangar - Kuala Perlis route.

The boat from Kuala Perlis is the shortest route over to Kuah Jetty on Langkawi Island with ferries taking just one hour and 15 minutes to make the trip.

Another option for travel by train from KL to Langkawi is to take the ETS train from KL to Alor Setar.

From Alor Setar Railway Station you can then take a taxi or cheap local bus (from the city centre) to the port of Kuala Kedah.

The boat from Kuala Kedah takes slightly longer than the boats from Kuala Perlis at one hour and 45 minutes and cost a few Ringgit more, but if you plan to travel by taxi from the train station to the jetty, it is cheaper from Alor Setar station than a taxi from Arau station as it is only 13 km away.

How to get to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur by Bus and Ferry

The cheapest way to travel from KL to Langkawi is to take a bus from Kuala Lumpur to the ferry port of Kuala Perlis, where boats leave every hour or so over to Kuah on Langkawi Island.

Buses leave from either TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) Bus Station or Hentian Duta Bus Station in Kuala Lumpur and arrive at Kuala Perlis Bus Station, just a few minutes walk away from the ferry terminal.

For visitors to KL, taking the bus from TBS is usually the easiest options as the TBS Bus Terminal is connected to the Bandar Tasik Selatan railway station.

Trains to BTS / TBS include KTM Komuuter trains from KL Sentral and LRT trains on the Sri Petaling Route/Line as well as KLIA Transit trains from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL).

Hentian Duta Bus Terminal is not quite so easy to get to from the city with no nearby train stations to get there you will have to take a taxi or local city bus.

Another option (if buses to K. Perlis are full) is to take a bus from KL to Kangar (Terminal Bukit Lagi).

From Kangar, you can then take a short trip on a Maraliner bus to the port at Kuala Perlis.


Other options to travel from KL to Langkawi by bus:

Take a bus from KL to Alor Setar from TBS or Hentian Duta bus terminals.

From Alor Setar Bus Station you can then take a local bus to the ferry port of Kuala Kedah.

If you want to visit Penang Island along the way, you could also take a bus from KL to Penang, then take the ferry from Penang to Langkawi (or continue overland by bus or Komuter Train to Kuala Perlis or Kuala Kedah).

Easily the quickest way to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi is to fly.

Malaysian Airlines offer regular scheduled departures from KUL to LGK.

Cheaper flight deals are offered by Air Asia and Malindo Air.

You can also fly from KL's other airport, Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (Subang Airport - SZB) to LGK with Malindo Air.
